Top View & Space Planner: Visualize Your Building Layout
Two powerful planning tools are built right into the IdeaRoom configurator to help you make confident purchase decisions:
Top View — a bird's-eye floor plan of your building that makes it easy to arrange and edit interior walls and mezzanines.
Space Planner — an interactive layout tool where you drag vehicles, equipment, and storage items onto the floor plan to check whether everything fits.
This guide walks you through both features, step by step.
Top View
What is Top View?
Top View switches the configurator from the standard 3D perspective to a flat, distortion-free overhead view of your building's interior. Because it uses an orthographic camera (no perspective distortion), walls and rooms appear at their true proportions — making it much easier to judge spacing, alignment, and room sizes.
How to Access Top View
Open your building in the configurator.
Click the Top View toggle (next to 3D).
The view switches instantly to an overhead floor plan. Toggling back to 3D View returns you to the standard perspective — any changes you made are preserved in both views.
Navigating the Top View
Action | How to do it |
Pan (move around) | Click and drag anywhere on the floor plan |
Zoom in / out | Scroll the mouse wheel or select the Zoom buttons in the toolbar located below the building |
Rotate 90° | Use the rotation buttons in the toolbar located below the building |
Working with Interior Walls
All wall controls in Top View match what's available in 3D View — changes sync instantly between both.
Action | How to do it |
Move a wall | Click the wall, then drag it to a new position |
Resize a wall | Click the End handles, then drag its edge or endpoint to change its length |
Rotate a wall 90° | Select the wall and use the orientation toggle button |
Delete a wall | Select the wall and click the delete button |
Duplicate a wall | Select the wall and click the duplicate button |
When a wall is selected, a dimension readout appears showing its current length. This updates in real time as you resize.
Working with Mezzanines
If your building includes a mezzanine, it appears in Top View within the building footprint. You can drag and drop the mezzanine to reposition on the floor plan.
Room Labels
Each enclosed room automatically receives a default label — Room 1, Room 2, Room 3, and so on. These labels match the rooms shown in the selection panel, making it easy to correlate what you see in Top View with the line items in your configuration.
Note: Custom room names are not available in the current release.
Working with Components
If your building includes components - doors or windows, they appear in Top View within the building footprint. You can drag and drop the component to reposition, duplicate or delete on the floor plan.
Note: Repositioning interior items (such as Lofts and Shelves) is not yet supported in Top View.
Working with Attached Leans
Attached lean-tos appear within the building footprint in Top View and can be repositioned by dragging and dropping.
Space Planner
What is Space Planner?
Space Planner answers the most common pre-purchase question: "Will my stuff fit?" You pick vehicles, equipment, and storage items from a library and place them on your building's floor plan. The tool flags collisions so you can verify that items — like a cargo van or a shelving unit — will clear the roof structure and not overlap.
No account is required to use the Space Planner. Your layout is not saved to your design, so treat it as a planning and confidence tool before you commit to a size.
How to Access Top View
Open your building in the configurator.
Click the Space Planner button (below the Share button).
The view switches instantly to an overhead floor plan and opens the Will my stuff fit? panel. Toggling back to 3D View returns you to the standard perspective — any changes you made are preserved in both views.
Switching Between 2D and 3D
Space Planner opens in Top View (2D) by default — a flat overhead floor plan that's easiest for placing items. Click the 3D toggle to rotate into a three-dimensional view of your building shell with items rendered inside.
Browsing the Item Library
The item library is divided into three categories. Use the filter chips at the top to narrow the list: Vehicles, Equipment, and Misc
Note: All dimensions are approximate estimates. Always verify measurements before purchasing.
Placing and Arranging Items
Find the item you want in the library.
Click the + button on the item card. It appears on the floor plan at a default position.
Drag the item to where you want it.
To rotate an item, select it and use the rotation control (90° increments).
To remove an item, select it and click the delete button.
Reading the Status Bar
The status bar at the bottom of the floor plan updates as you add and move items:
Items — total number of items placed
Floor space used — combined footprint of all items vs. total building sq ft
Collisions — number of overlapping items (shown as a warning if greater than 0)
If two items overlap, both are highlighted with a collision indicator. Reposition one of them until the collision clears.
Checking Height Clearance
If an item is too tall, it will be highlighted with a collision indicator. Increase the height of the building or selected a different item until the collision clears.
Note: Heights are approximate estimates only. Actual clearances depend on your building's specific configuration. Always confirm with your sales representative before purchasing.
Note: Item and positions in Space Planner are not saved to your design — only the building configuration (size, style, options) is stored.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of These Tools
Start with Space Planner before finalizing your size. Place everything you plan to store, then check whether the status bar shows zero collisions and a comfortable amount of remaining floor space.
Use Top View to fine-tune interior walls, components, mezzanines, and attached leans. If you've interior walls, mezzanine, components, or attached leans switch to Top View to drag-and-drop items into their ideal positions without fighting the 3D perspective.
Room labels help you stay oriented. If you have multiple rooms, the Room 1 / Room 2 / Room 3 labels in Top View match the room tabs in the selection panel, so you always know which room you're editing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Top View work on mobile?
Yes. Top View is usable on mobile, though it's optimized for desktop. The floor plan is fully pannable and zoomable on mobile.
Will my Space Planner items be saved if I come back later?
No — Space Planner item positions are not saved to your design. Use the Save Design button to preserve your building configuration, but take a screenshot or note your layout before closing the browser if you want to reference your Space Planner arrangement later.
Can I add my own custom items to Space Planner?
Not in the current release. The library includes standard vehicles, equipment, and miscellaneous items with representative dimensions. Custom item uploads are planned for a future update.
Can I rotate items to any angle, or only 90°?
Items in Space Planner rotate in 90° increments in the current release. Freeform rotation is planned for a future update.
What happens to room labels when I delete a wall?
Room labels reset when a wall is removed. If you delete a wall and re-add it, the rooms are renumbered starting from Room 1.
Is there a limit to how many items I can add in Space Planner?
No — there is no limit on the number of items you can place on the floor plan.
