How to set up a KML map

Updated over 11 months ago

KML Definition

A KML map refers to a file format used to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as Google Earth, Google Maps, and other map software. KML stands for Keyhole Markup Language and is a file format used to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as Google Earth. These files show overlays on satellite images or maps that include points, lines, and shapes.

KML files are useful for a variety of purposes including planning trips, showing locations on a map, overlaying historical data, and much more. They can contain elements like:

  • Placemarks: Mark specific locations with a name and description.

  • Paths: Represent routes or lines between different points.

  • Polygons: Define areas to represent boundaries or regions.

  • Styles: Customize the appearance of the placemarks, paths, and polygons.

  • Images and Models: Embed 2D images or 3D models into the map.

The KML file structure allows users to organize and share complex geographic data in a relatively simple format, making it popular for both personal and professional use in geographical information systems (GIS).

Overview

Using KML maps to delineate regions based on different pricing, delivery fees, or building styles can streamline your processes and ensure accurate service delivery. This guide provides a detailed step-by-step approach to mapping these areas and exporting the necessary files to be used in IdeaRoom's software.

Steps

1. Obtain Latitude and Longitude Points

  1. Visit a GPS Coordinate Finder Website:

  2. Enter the Address:

    • Type in the address for which you need the coordinates.

  3. Get GPS Coordinates:

    • Click "Get GPS Coordinates."

  4. Copy Latitude and Longitude Points:

    • Note down the latitude and longitude points provided.

2. Create a Radius with Latitude and Longitude Points

  1. Visit a Radius Mapping Website:

    • Go to a site like Circle Plot or an alternative radius mapping site.

  2. Input Coordinates:

    • Enter the latitude and longitude points in the respective fields.

  3. Set Radius Units to Miles:

    • Ensure the units are set to miles.

  4. Define Radius Amounts:

    • Enter the desired mile radius in the Circle 1, 2, 3, etc., boxes. Leave unused boxes blank.

  5. Create KML File:

    • Click "Create KML File" to download the KML file containing your specified radius.

3. Map Out Areas on Google Maps

  1. Access Google My Maps:

  2. Create a New Map:

    • Click "Create a New Map."

  3. Import KML File:

    • Under the "Untitled layer," click "Import."

    • Upload the circleplot KML file you previously downloaded.

    • Your specified point and radius will now be visible on the map.

4. Draw the Actual Area to be Used

  1. Draw a Line or Shape:

    • Click "Draw a line" and select "Add line or shape."

  2. Create a Polygon:

    • Begin drawing the shape around the area you want to enclose.

    • Close the shape to form a polygon.

  3. Name the Polygon:

    • Rename it according to its purpose, such as region1, free delivery, $5 delivery, state, etc.

  4. Add Additional Regions (if necessary):

    • Click "Add Layer" to import additional circleplot KML files for other points and radii.

5. Export the Final Map

  1. Export to KML/KMZ:

    • Click the three ellipsis (menu) on the Map Menu.

    • Select "Export to KML/KMZ."

  2. Export Settings:

    • Set it to "Entire map."
